Prospect Place Mansion

Dresden, Ohio

From the official Prospect Place Estate website:

A BRIEF HISTORY:

"Prospect Place" was the home of the George Willison Adams family of Dresden, Ohio, in the 19th & 20th centuries.  This structure is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is currently in the process of being restored.  In the 1850s and 1860s the house was a station on the "Underground Railroad".  Although a few fine homes remain in Dresden from this era, Prospect Place is the last remaining Dresden area mansion (There were five:  Prospect Place; River Dale; Mulberry Grove; Maple Hollow and Elm Grove), the others have met the fate of time and neglect and are no more.  These were the homes of the "Lords of the Valley", men of great influence and wealth who helped tame a new land and create a community.  We are restoring this home as a memorial to times gone by and to give the Dresden area back a piece of an ever-vanishing history.

I came across the website for Prospect Place while searching for places to investigate in Ohio. The site: http://www.forgottenoh.com/haunted.html provides an excellent resource by county and we were soon to discover that Prospect Place was a phenomenal find!

We arrived around 3 p.m. on the afternoon of December 30, 2005. There were six of us on this excursion as we had the pleasure of Marianne's oldest daughter, Alicia, home for the holidays and eager to accompany us on her first formal investigation. Although early, we were welcomed warmly by George Adams and shown to our rooms upstairs. Mr. Adams encouraged us to not only make ourselves comfortable but to wander freely on the upper levels. We quickly assembled our equipment and began to take a look around while it was still light. Our guide for the evening, Heather, would not be arriving until 8 p.m. This provided ample time to locate a place to eat in town, grab some munchies for the night at the local grocery, and return for the start of our tour. Our first encounter with the unusual happened long before the tour began.

There are four rooms off the main hall on the second level. The two restored bedrooms are at the farthest end.

We had opted for the small additional charge for use of the restored bedrooms.

The first room on the left was the mistress' bedroom and has the only bathroom on the upper floors. This room was not restored at this time and, while the bathroom had lights, the room itself did not.

The bathroom provided all the necessaries and had a very interesting entry. You walked down two steps to be level with the sink and tub. A sharp turn to the left and another step down led you to the toilet.

While awaiting the arrival of our tour guide, we prepared our equipment and ourselves for the night ahead. It was this trip to the restroom that settled the question of whether there would be any activity during this particular investigation. I had just finished washing my hands when it felt as though I had been struck from behind on my left shoulder. I quickly turned but there was no one there. The door was still latched. The atmosphere felt heavy and I just wanted out of the room. I was experiencing a burning-stinging sensation and quickly headed to the bedroom.

I had Sis take a look and she described a red welted area. She said it appeared as though something had actually scraped the skin; much like a fingernail scratch that had drawn blood.

Needless to say, we did not venture through this area alone anymore! Later that evening while doing a companion run, Sis was sitting on the sofa just outside of the bathroom. She watched a small grouping of orbs manifest themselves on the other side of the room. She was trying to quietly call out for someone to come with a camera to capture this anomaly, but to no avail. We explored all possibilities of an outside light or reflections and could find no reasonable explanation.

Once our guide arrived we were treated to a walk-through of the home. We had explored the upper levels pretty extensively and were now familiar with the divisions of the servant quarters, family living area, and the "sick room." The main level is actually in use by the owner. Graciously enough, the owner allowed us a peek at the renovated master bedroom. With all due respect to the individuals living there, we limited our access to the rear entrance.

The owners of Prospect Place are committed to restoring the mansion to its original decor. The ornate moldings are quite unique and pose quite a challenge.
